Students Dazzle at District Public Speaking Finals

Public speaking is one of the most common fears for many people. However, 32 Abbotsford students faced their fears head-on when they participated in the Abbotsford School District’s annual Public Speaking Finals Competition on April 29th and 30th. The finals were attended by family, teachers, friends, and administrators, with a panel of judges that included school board trustees, current and retired administrators, and district helping teachers.

Leading up to the finals, students in 19 separate elementary and middle schools from grades 5-8 first presented their speech in their classrooms. After the classroom presentations, several students were then chosen to move on to the semi-final event within their school and from there participating schools each chose one finalist per grade to move on to the District Finals.

Students presented original speeches on a variety of unique topics, ranging from: “Having Parents as Teachers” and “Time Management & Procrastination” to  “Elephants” and “Accidental Foods”.
